Is your brain working against you?

Seven ways your brain might be working against you as a Real Estate Agent.

Mind Reading A

You presume to know what someone needs and wants. ‘Nice quiet neighbourhood,’ can sound like hell for some people, bliss to others. Same with words like ‘fast’ or ‘quickly’ to someone who doesn’t want to be hurried.

Mind Reading B:

You think they won’t go for something when they really will, presuming rejection. If they love it enough they might be able to find the money above their budget. If you’ve decided that you absolutely know what they are prepared to do then you’ve possibly missed out on a sale.

Fortune Telling:

You think that a property will never sell, then your energy and enthusiasm goes down and you’re less likely to sell it, and on the downward spiral goes. (Some people thought that EXP wouldn’t last and look at how wrong they were!) We make the future, we don’t predict it.

Personalising disappointment:

If things don’t turn out the way you want, instead of brushing it off and reminding yourself that this is just how life is sometimes, or focusing on what you’ve learned, you choose to beat yourself up. This is an energy drag and makes you less likely to stay fully in the game.

Labelling:

You decide early on that someone is ‘difficult’ or a ‘time waster’ or that a property is a ‘dump.’ The label you put on that person or property then puts you straight back into that singular way of thinking and behaving around them the next time you’re around them, blocking your creativity and flexible ways of relating.

Blaming:

This can feel good in the moment but if you are overly fixating on what someone did wrong or how unfair the markets or regulations are in your district, you can slip into learned helplessness and not get into a more productive active-turnaround mode.

Failure To Celebrate:

Celebrating is all about self acknowledgment and focusing on the win. When we move too quickly onto the next task without really feeling great about our breakthrough then the brain can go into a state of, ‘Why even bother?’ and gradually start to not work so hard or not feel as excited as it could.
